Anuradha Paudwal, born Alka Nadkarni in Karwar, Karnataka, India, is an Indian playback and devotional singer whose recording career has continued since 1973. She has contributed extensively to Hindi cinema while building a substantial catalogue of devotional music that has reached audiences across India and international markets. Her recordings encompass film soundtracks, bhajans, aartis, mantras, and spiritual albums released in numerous Indian languages. She made her recording debut with the Sanskrit verse "Omkaram Bindu Sanyuktam" for the film “Abhimaan,” composed by S. D. Burman. During the 1970s, she worked across Hindi and Marathi cinema before emerging as one of Bollywood's leading female playback singers in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Her recordings for films including “Hero,” “Ram Lakhan,” “Aashiqui,” “Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin,” “Sadak,” “Saajan,” and “Beta,” became major commercial successes. Throughout her career, she collaborated with composers such as S. D. Burman, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Nadeem Shravan, Anand Milind, and Rajesh Roshan, contributing to many successful soundtrack albums. Alongside her film work, Paudwal established herself as one of India's leading devotional recording artists through her long association with T-Series. Her devotional catalogue includes recordings dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, Durga, Ganesha, Hanuman, and Sai Baba, helping expand the commercial reach of devotional music through cassette, CD, and digital distribution. Her repertoire extends across Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Odia, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Assamese, Nepali, Sanskrit, Maithili, and Brajbhasha. Across her career, she has recorded more than 9,000 songs for over 550 films in addition to more than 1,500 devotional recordings, placing her among the most prolific recording artists in Indian music. Paudwal has received numerous distinctions, including the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer, four Filmfare Awards, six Maharashtra State Film Awards, two Odisha State Film Awards, and the Padma Shri, awarded by the Government of India in 2017 for her contribution to the arts. D. Y. Patil University has also awarded her an honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.). Beyond her recording career, she founded the Suryoday Foundation, a charitable organization focused on healthcare and community welfare initiatives. Her catalogue continues to be licensed across streaming platforms, broadcast media, digital retailers, and physical formats, ensuring continued availability for new generations of listeners.
